Ammo shopping tips: cost-per-round without the hype

Practical ammo buying habits — CPR math, brass vs steel, shipping/hazmat, and why fake “lowest price” badges are useless.

Ammo pricing is noisy. The useful number is almost always cost per round delivered to your door, not the big cart badge on the product tile.

Do the CPR math

  • Divide total price (ammo + shipping + tax if shown) by round count.
  • Watch case vs. box listings — a “cheap” 50-round box can lose to a bulk case once shipping lands.
  • Ignore “was $X” strikethroughs you cannot verify. Compare the same cartridge, bullet weight, and case type across stores.

Brass, steel, and primers

Brass-cased ammo is usually preferred for reloading and many range rules. Steel-cased can be fine for high-volume practice if your firearm and range allow it — but it is not interchangeable advice for every gun. Match the load to the manual and your local range policy.

Shipping and state rules

Some retailers add hazmat or ammo-handling fees; others bake them into free-shipping thresholds. Certain states and localities restrict online ammo shipments or require face-to-face transfer. Confirm eligibility for your address before the cart is full.

Stock vs. “deal”

If a caliber is chronically out of stock everywhere, a slightly higher CPR from a store that actually has inventory beats a phantom sale. We do not invent live prices on this site — open the retailer pages and verify.
